Security Guard Certification

Looking into security guard certification?

For many people, the job of being a security guard is one that appeals to them, but they might not be really aware of what it entails or what they need to do to get the job in the first place. While it is true that many people venture into the field of security from law enforcement, there are many individuals who have never entered law enforcement who have great careers in the field. If you are interested in this career for yourself, you should take a look at the security guard certification that you might need, as well as the security guard training that might go with it.

When it comes to certification, it is worth noticing that the actual state regulations will vary from place to place. Most states, for instance, require that you be licensed, but what this actually means in terms of training and certification will vary greatly. For the most part, to qualify for certification, you will need to be at least 18 years old, pass a drug test and pass a background check. You'll also find that basic security guard training will cover things that include emergency procedures, property rights and training in how to detain suspected criminals.

For the most part, there are no academic requirements for this career, but you may find that an associate degree from a two year program in a criminal justice related program can be highly useful in securing a position, as can a one or two semester long course in general. You'll also find that you may wish to to take a look at the requirements necessary for to become a surveillance officer, which will involve familiarity with things like camera equipment as well as how to look for people who might be engaged in very specific scams.

On the more practical end of things, you will also find that security guard training will often include training in forms of restraint, and, if you are looking at an armed guard position, you will need to have formal training in the use of weapons. You will need to keep the weapon safe during a physical attack, and you will also need to know the laws concerning the use of force. When you are seeing security guard training for federal employ, you will also find that you need to pass a firearms test, a first aid test, and a written examination.

When you are considering a career as a security guard, take a look at the certification requirements and find out what you can about whether this field is right for you!
